How FindMyExtras Works: Data Methodology & Verification Standards
FindMyExtras is an independent factory specification audit service for Mercedes-Benz passenger cars. This document explains how we process Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs), where datacard production records originate, how SA option codes are structured, and the boundaries of pre-purchase verification.
1. 17-Digit VIN Architecture (ISO 3779)
Every modern Mercedes-Benz vehicle is assigned a 17-character alphanumeric Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) compliant with the international ISO 3779 standard. The VIN comprises three functional blocks:
World manufacturer identifier (e.g. WDB, WDD, W1K for Mercedes-Benz Germany).
Vehicle descriptor section: identifies the chassis (e.g. 213 for the E-Class, 205 for the C-Class), engine and body style.
Vehicle identifier section: assembly plant code (Sindelfingen, Bremen, Rastatt) and sequential serial number.
2. The Factory Production Datacard & SA Codes
When a Mercedes rolls off the assembly line, the manufacturer generates an immutable digital production record — historically known as the 'Datenkarte' (datacard). This document registers every individual Sonderausstattung (SA) special equipment code selected for that specific chassis.
What are SA codes? They are numeric or alphanumeric identifiers of 3 to 4 characters assigned by Mercedes-Benz. For example:
- Code 772: AMG Styling (aerodynamic bumper kit and sports side skirts).
- Code 810: Burmester Surround Sound System (or Harman Kardon on generations before 2014).
- Code 489: AIRMATIC or AIR BODY CONTROL air suspension.
- Code 642: MULTIBEAM dynamic LED headlamps (adaptive matrix technology).
3. The Pre-Purchase Verification Triad
No single report can answer every pre-purchase question. Our methodology separates vehicle evaluation into three complementary pillars:
How did the car leave the factory?
Provided by FindMyExtras: shows exactly which options, packages, engine and colour the manufacturer built the car with.
What condition is the car in today?
Done in person by the buyer or a mechanic: checks that the original parts are still fitted, plus wear, function and the absence of leaks.
What happened afterwards?
Provided by damage-history databases (such as carVertical): aggregates insurer, inspection-centre and police records to detect serious accidents or mileage tampering.
4. Data Boundaries & Transparency
Technical integrity requires explicit clarity regarding what factory production datacards do NOT prove:
- It does not certify present mechanical condition: A car may have left the factory with AIRMATIC suspension and years later been quietly converted to conventional steel springs. The datacard proves what was fitted at the factory, but it does not replace a visual check inside the wheel arches.
- It does not record later accidents or mileage: Damage records and periodic inspections belong to public and insurer databases, not to the manufacturer's production engineering records.
- It does not reflect unofficial replacements: If a previous owner fitted stick-on Burmester speaker covers or replica bumpers, those parts are not and never will be on the factory datacard.
5. Independence & Privacy Statement
FindMyExtras is an independent data lookup tool and has no affiliation, representation or contractual relationship with Mercedes-Benz Group AG. All trademarks, model designations and equipment terms belong to their respective owners and are referred to solely to identify the product and its technical compatibility.
We do not store bank details or payment card numbers (transactions are processed with SSL encryption by Lemon Squeezy, a Stripe company). VIN lookups are processed securely.
